Host: Todd Paula, CTV’s The Verdict

Journalist and lawyer Paula Todd is the host of CTV Newsnet's The Verdict with Paula Todd, the first national, nightly, live current affairs
program devoted to law and justice. For a decade, Paula co-hosted TVO's Gemini-award-winning live current affairs program Studio 2.

She also hosted and co-produced the popular biography program Paula Todd: Person 2 Person. A former political reporter and editorial board member of the Toronto Star, she holds a B.A. in literature, an L.L.B from Osgoode Hall Law School, and is a member of the Ontario Bar. Paula has been widely published in The Globe and Mail, The Star, Reader's Digest, Homemakers and The Law Times. She is the author of the best-selling book A Quiet Courage: Inspiring Stories from All Of Us, the first Canadian non-fiction book to be featured as a BookShort documentary film.

Keynote Speaker: Ian Hanomansing, CBC News: News at Six

A former anchor of CBC’s Canada Now, Ian Hanomansing now hosts CBC’s News at Six, Hemispheres and Feeling the Heat.

He holds degrees in political science, sociology and law, and has received six national university debating and public speaking championship titles.

His award-winning broadcast career has taken him around the world, covering stories from the creation of Nunavut, the San Diego Heaven’s Gate cult suicides, the Vancouver Stanley Cup riots, the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the 1997 hand-over of Hong Kong, as well as three Olympic games.

Panel 1: The Uneasy Marriage between the Courts and the Media; a case study of the Medicine Hat triple murder trial.
Panellists include: Justice J. H. Langston, Court of Queen’s Bench; Scott Watson, Parlee McLaws; James Neeley, Medicine Hat News; Bob Remington, Calgary Herald.

Panel 2: Courthouse Journalism, American Style: Electronic Access to Justice. Panellists include: Justice Peter McIntyre, Court of Queen’s Bench;  Dawn Walton, Globe and Mail; Sanjeev Anand, Faculty of Law, University of Alberta.

Panel 3: Who Let the Blogs Out?: Citizen Journalism and the Rise of Internet Reporting.  Panellists include: David Cohn, Editor, NewAssignment.net;  Bob Bragg, Centre for Communications Studies, Mount Royal College; Gerry Nicholls, Senior Fellow Democracy Institute 

Conference Cost:  $150/participant. Includes breakfast buffet, three panel discussions, lunch, keynote speech, refreshment breaks, conference materials and reception.
