Notice to the Profession - Suspension of Terry James Thomas

Effective July 15, 2009, Terry James Thomas was suspended for non-payment of the 2009/2010 insurance levy.

 

Rules Amended Regarding Change to Citizenship Requirements (TILMA)

Rules of the Law Society of Alberta were amended to be consistent with changes to citizenship requirements under the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA). The agreement between the governments of Alberta and BC was implemented earlier this year.

The rules which were amended include:

  • Rules 51.1(1) & (2) (Requirement for Citizenship or Permanent Residence Status for Admission);
  • Rule 67(7) (Oath on Enrollment); 
  • Rules 114(2)(b) and (c) to (i) (Requirement for Citizenship or Permanent Residence Status for Reinstatement); and
  • Rule 114(3)

New Code Rule Relieves Conflict of Interest for Pro Bono Clinics

Benchers approved the addition of a new Rule to the LSA's Code of Professional Conduct.

A new Rule 5.1 in Chapter 6 was added to the Code. The effect of this new Rule will be to provide, in limited circumstances, relief from the Conflict of Interest provisions of the Code to "non-profit legal services providers" which includes pro bono clinics and Legal Aid offices.

Nominate an Outstanding Lawyer for an Award

Please consider nominating an outstanding lawyer for a Distinguished Service Award.

Jointly awarded by the LSA and CBA-Alberta, these awards recognize the numerous outstanding contributions Alberta lawyers make to the community, the profession, legal scholarship and in pro bono legal services.

The deadline for making a nomination for the 2010 Distinguished Service Awards in any of the above categories is November 13, 2009.

The awards will be presented at the Alberta Law Conference on Friday, January 29, 2010 at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, Alberta.
