Call for Nominations for 2009 Awards

If you know an Alberta lawyer who has made an outstanding contribution, consider nominating him or her for a 2009 Distinguished Service Award.

Presented jointly by the Law Society of Alberta and Canadian Bar Association Alberta, these four  Distinguished Service Awards celebrate excellence for: (1) Service to the Community, (2) Service to the Profession, (3) Service Award for Legal Scholarship, and (4) for Pro Bono Legal Service

Nominations should include:
• Nominee information, i.e. name, award category, firm/company name, business phone and fax, business and email addresses
• Nominator information including name, business phone and fax, business and email addresses.
• A statement detailing why the candidate is worthy of the award
• A curriculum vitae outlining the nominee’s background, career and any present activities that qualify them for nomination in one of the four categories.
• A maximum of two letters of support for the nomination.

Deadline for nominations: 4:30 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2008. The 2009 Distinguished Service Awards will be presented at the Alberta Law Conference on Friday, January 30, 2009 at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald in Edmonton, Alberta.

Feedback sought on Practice Advisors Service.

Your feedback is sought about the services of the LSA's Practice Advisors.

The LSA is surveying Alberta lawyers who may have used Practice Advisor services in the last year. The information collected will help the LSA better understand the needs of lawyers and help the LSA improve its Practice Advisor services.

2008 Bencher Election

On November 18, 2008, Alberta lawyers voted for a new slate of Benchers to govern the Law Society of Alberta.

The Benchers elected for 2008-2011 include incumbents: Neena Ahluwalia QC (Edmonton); Shirish Chotalia QC (Edmonton); Ron Everard QC (Calgary); John Higgerty QC (northern leader - Hinton): Carsten Jensen QC (Calgary); Rod Jerke QC (southern leader - Lethbridge); Douglas R. Mah QC (Edmonton); Peter Michalyshyn QC, President-Elect (Edmonton); Roy Nickerson QC (Edmonton); Stephen Raby QC (Calgary); and Dale Spackman QC (Calgary).

Incoming Benchers include: Rose M. Carter QC (Edmonton); James T. Eamon (Calgary); Fred Fenwick QC (Calgary); Kevin Feth (Edmonton); James A. Glass, (acclaimed - Red Deer); John T. Henderson (Edmonton); Frederica Schutz (Edmonton); Scott A. Watson (Edmonton); and Anthony G. Young (Calgary).
