Bencher Election Nomination Deadline

Nominations of candidates willing to let their name stand for election to the Law Society of Alberta Benchers must be submitted in writing by September 16, 2008.

All active members eligible to vote will cast ballots to fill the slate of Benchers on November 18, 2008.  Benchers will be elected to a three-year term.

All nominations must be received by the LSA's Calgary office before 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Please visit www.lawsociety.ab.ca for more details and to download a nomination form.

 

 

 

Distinguished Service Award nominations open

If you know an Alberta lawyer who has made an outstanding contribution to his or her community, to the profession, to legal scholarship and in pro bono legal service, consider nominating him or her for a 2009 Distinguished Service Award.

Presented jointly by the Law Society of Alberta and Canadian Bar Association Alberta, these annual awards celebrate excellence in the legal profession.

Deadline for nominations is 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 14, 2008.

The 2009 Distinguished Service Awards will be presented at the Alberta Law Conference on Friday, January 30, 2009 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Is the Rule of Law on Trial?

Registrations are being accepted for the Law Society of Alberta's 6th annual Media and Law seminar, set for October 18, 2008.

Well-known Canadian journalist, Rex Murphy, will be the keynote speaker at the dinner. The seminar will be moderated by Paula Todd, currently a reporter with CTV's W-Five.

The afternoon seminar will be held at the University of Alberta's Lister Centre in Edmonton. Panels will discuss these questions: (1) Does the Legal System Straitjacket Full Reporting, and (2) Is the Rule of Law on Trial?

Early bird fees, paid by September 15, are $125/person and $100/student. Dinner & keynote address only is $40.
