Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin Over the past century, the evolving roles and responsibilities of the Law Society of Alberta have mirrored and contributed to social and economic growth in Alberta. Since its establishment one hundred years ago, the Law Society of Alberta has undertaken a number of initiatives, including an assurance fund, mandatory liability insurance for lawyers, and the implementation of legal aid. Today, the contemporary Society is a vibrant organization that fulfils its mandate and protects the public interest while providing numerous services to its members.

100th Anniversary Gala Dinner

provide a view to our future. The keynote speeches by the Honourable Peter Lougheed and Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin will be simulcast between Calgary and Edmonton. Master of Ceremonies for the dinner will be Allan Shewchuk in Calgary and James A. Wachowich in Edmonton.

100th Anniversary Conference

The 100th Anniversary Conference, called Canadian Lawyers in the 21st Century, will feature four plenary sessions and panelists from around the world. Held at the University of Alberta's Lister Centre, the morning session will focus on Diversity and Demographic Change, and Access to Legal Services. After lunch, panelists will lead discussions on professional competence and regulation and the legal profession.

Guest keynote speaker will be Harry Arthurs, former Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School and former President of York University.

100th Anniversary Gala Dinner Keynote Speakers:



Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin - Born in Pincher Creek, Alberta, Chief Justice Beverly McLachlin attended the University of Alberta and graduated with her law degree in 1968. She practised law in Edmonton, Fort St. John and Vancouver before becoming a University of B.C. law professor. Beginning her career as a judge in 1981, she has served on every level of court in B.C. until she was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989. On January 7, 2000, she was appointed Chief Justice of Canada. She is the first woman to hold this position.

The Honourable Peter Lougheed - Peter Lougheed graduated with a law degree from the University of Alberta in 1952. While he practised law in Calgary in the 1950s and 1960s, he is best known for his career in politics. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1967, and four years later he and his Progressive Conservative Party took power. He was Premier of Alberta during some of the most exciting and important years of provincial development - the 1970s and early 1980s. He resigned as Premier in 1985 and left political life in 1986. He now practices law with Bennett Jones LLP.

Harry Arthurs - Former Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School and former President of York University, Harry Arthurs is one of Canada's leading labour law scholars. He has written extensively on labour law, administrative law, law and globalization, legal ethics, and governance of the legal profession.
