Child Friendly "Family Law": Don't get Lost in the Shuffle
Contributed by Children's Legal and Educational Resource Centre (CLERC)
|
A handbook about family law for youth, parents, service providers and professionals working with children is now available for purchase.
The reference handbook is written from a young person's perspective, focusing on the issues of young people in the context of family law. It has been produced in a question-and-answer format. It is being distributed to guidance counselors and most libraries in every junior and senior high school in Alberta. It has been approved by the major Boards of Education in Alberta as school curriculum.
Funding for development of the handbook and companion deck of cards was provided by the Alberta Law Foundation while Justice Canada, and Family and Community Support Services (City of Calgary) provided funds to reproduce these |

materials for wider distribution. It was a joint initiative of CLERC and the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre. The contributions of members of the Canadian Bar Association and CLERC volunteers - Gillian Marriott (Chair, CLERC), Rita Richards and Colleen Nicholls (CLERC Legal Advisory Committee members) added greatly to the quality of the handbook.

Family Law Lawyers: Legal Aid Alberta needs you!
|
Due to the exceptionally high demand for family law legal services at this time on top of a heavy existing case load, Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) has found itself in a position in which they are unable to offer legal assistance to clients in a timely fashion. While they are focusing on resolving these problems over the next few months, the immediate need is critical.
It is calling on private bar lawyers to offer their valued support and services by taking as many family law files as possible. Even if you can only take one file, you will be helping to manage this situation and granting clients the access to justice they are entitled to. |
|
Legal Aid Alberta respects any limitations on the number or types of files lawyers are comfortable with taking. If you wish to specify the maximum number or type of family files you will accept, please be assured that you will not be called with referrals for other types of family files. LAA has also worked to simplify the tariff of fees for civil files and, if you haven't done any legal aid work for several years, you may find that the general coverage now provided is much easier to use than the previous tariff items.
