Plaque Ceremonies Bring Regional Bars Together

In conjunction with the Court of Queen's Bench centennial plaque unveiling ceremonies, members of the regional bar associations have been hosting centennial events to commemorate the Law Society of Alberta's 100th anniversary.

The following lists the upcoming 2007 fall schedule of CQB plaque unveilings and regional bar association events.

Drumheller - September 27 beginning with a ceremony at 3:00 p.m. at the courthouse, followed by a reception.

Wetaskiwin - October 2 with a 2:30 p.m. tour of the old courthouse, a 3:30 p.m. ceremony at the present courthouse followed by a 4:00 p.m. reception.

Edmonton - October 4 with a 11:00 a.m. plaque unveiling in the Edmonton Law Courts Buidling, followed by an Edmonton bar group photo at 1:00 p.m. at Edmonton City Hall.

Red Deer - October 24 with details to be confirmed

Lethbridge - October 25 with a dinner being hosted by the Lethbridge Bar Association at the Galt Museum with the plaque being unveiled there.

Medicine Hat - November 14 with details to follow

This past May and June, I participated in plaque unveiling ceremonies at the court houses Jack Watson of the Alberta Court of Appeal and Scott Watson, President of the CBA - Alberta branch. In addition growth and development of Alberta over the past 100 years. As President, I have also spoken of my
in Peace River, Grande Prairie, St. Paul and Fort McMurray. The events were organized by the local bar associations. On each occasion, Chief Justice Wachowich and I unveiled a beautiful bronze plaque. The plaque lists all of the chief justices and associate chief justices as well as the attorney generals in the 100-year history of Alberta's Superior Court, which began as the Supreme Court of Alberta and is now the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta. pride in the decision of the benchers to support the establishment of Pro Bono Law Alberta and my confidence that this new entity will provide lawyers in Alberta with additional opportunities to improve access to justice for many Albertans. On September 16, 2007, the Law Society of Alberta will reach an important milestone. Exactly 100 years ago on this date, the Law Society of Alberta came into existence. The intervening years have seen the roles and responsibilities of the Society evolve and grow. This issue of the Advisory focuses on our 100th Anniversary celebratory events as well as topics
court staff. The Law Society arranged for photographs to be taken, some of which accompany this message (see the following pages). In Fort McMurray, we were joined by Associate Chief Justice Wittmann, Justice to the plaque unveiling, we were treated to an interesting tour of Finning's Mildred Lake facility. These events provided me with the a great opportunity to meet members of the local bar. I very much appreciated the warm hospitality that was extended as well as the chance to hear lawyers about their concerns. Frequently this year, I have spoken about the important contributions lawyers have made to the we think you should be aware of. The Law Society will always strive to improve, however, we have much to be proud of as we celebrate our 100th Anniversary.
