New Complaint and Inquiry Guideline Approved for Website

By Perry Mack, QC, Bencher and Chair, Conduct Committee

Perry Mack

A new complaint and inquiry guideline on the website will explain how the Law Society of Alberta handles inquiries, complaints and other information received by the conduct department.

The Law Society receives approximately 3,000 complaints every year, many of which are resolved at the intake and assess-ment level. This guideline provides better information to the general public about the complaint and inquiry process, and is posted on the Law Society’s website. The process an inquiry may progress through is described below:

1.Inquiry and dispute resolution.
2.Review of conduct by a complaints manager.
3.Deferring reviews of formal complaints, as a result of other relevant, ongoing proceedings.
4.Investigation process.
5.Dismissal of formal complaint after being reviewed. (The appeal process is included).
6.Referral of a formal complaint to the Conduct Committee Panel.

The guideline also includes the relevant extracts from the Legal Profession Act and the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta.
