John Beckingham, QC was admitted to the Alberta bar in November 1956 after earning his law degree the previous year from the University of Alberta. He has practiced with the firms Quilliam, Stuart, Rae & Co, and McCuaig Desrochers in Edmonton. Justice John Berchmans Dea, was admitted to the Alberta bar in June 1956 after receiving his law degree in 1955 from the University of Alberta. He practiced law with Field, Hyndman in Edmonton, 1955-1978 before being appointed judge of the District Court of Alberta. Gregory R. Forsyth, QC received his BA from the University of Alberta in 1950 and his LL.B. in 1951. He was admitted to the Alberta bar in 1952 and first worked as in-house counsel for the Canadian Pacific Railway law department. After practicing at Howard Dixon Mackie & Forsyth, he was named a Justice with the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. After two decades as a Justice, Mr. Forsyth rejoined his former practice, now called Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, as counsel. Donnell (Don) O’Brien Sabey, QC obtained his BA (1954) and LL.B (1955) at the University of Utah. He was admitted to the Alberta bar October 1956 and began his career at Bennett Jones in Calgary. He is one of the few lawyers who have given as many as five decades of service to one firm. He served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta from 1976-1982. Joseph Trofimuk, QC was admitted to the Alberta bar in June 1956 and practiced law with the firms: Cox, Trofimuk Campbell, 1956-1989; Cox, Trofimuk & Company, Feb-May 1989; and Cox, Trofimuk Campbell, 1989-2006. His family will be presented with his 50-year award of service. He died October 22, 2006.

The centennial of the Law Society of Alberta in 2007 will be an opportunity to celebrate the rich and diverse history of the legal profession in Alberta, and to share its vision for the future with all Albertans. Legacy Project – Pro Bono Law Alberta – Spring 2007 The Law Society of Alberta intends to establish a Pro Bono Law Alberta network as a legacy project for the people of Alberta. Community Project – LawNow – Spring 2007 The Legal Studies Program at the University of Alberta will produce a special edition of LawNow in conjunction with the anniversary celebrations of the Law Society of Alberta. Stamp Launch – September 13, 2007 Canada Post will be issuing stamps to commemorate the centennials of the Law Societies of Alberta and Saskatchewan. There will be stamp launches in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta (locations to be determined) and also at Government House in Regina, Saskatchewan. 100th Anniversary Book Launch – September 14, 2007 The Law Society of Alberta and Legal Archives Society of Alberta are partnering in the publication of a special |

commemorative anniversary book which will be launched simultaneously in Edmonton and Calgary. Joint Bencher Convocation – September 26-28, 2007 The Law Society of Saskatchewan has invited the Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta to join them for a joint Convocation in Cypress Hills Inter-Provincial Park to commemorate their shared centennials. Gala Dinner – October 4, 2007 A 100th Anniversary Gala Dinner will be hosted by the Law Society of Alberta, Court of Queen’s Bench and the Legal Archives Society of Alberta. Guest speakers will be Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin at Northlands Park in Edmonton and The Honorable Peter Lougheed at the Roundup Centre in Calgary. Both speeches will be simulcast via satellite uplink at both venues. Tickets are $150 each or $1100 per table (seating eight). Conference – October 26-27, 2007 “The Future of the Canadian Legal Profession” will be the theme for the Law Society of Alberta’s 100th anniversary conference to be held at Lister Hall on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton. Tickets for the Friday evening reception, Saturday conference and dinner are $200.
